First we took our quiz. Then we played Fraction Action Fraction Friction which is a game consisting of luck and fraction knowledge.

Rules for Fraction Action Fraction Friction:

The object of the game is to get as close to 2 as possible with out going over 2 because if you go over you automaticly lose.First everyone takes a card and makes sure everyone else sees it.Then if you think you can pick another card and not go over 2 you pick another card and say action, but don’t let anyone see that card or any card after the first card.If you think you are as close to 2 as you can be without going over then you say friction. You keep saying action until you think you should stop then you say friction. The game continues until every player has said friction then you add up all your fraction cards and the person closest to 2 without going over wins.

We watched a movie about India. The capital of India is New Delhi. The official languages spoken in India are Hindi, English and several others. In India the main religion is Hindu. Hindus believe in reincarnation which is when your soul gets reborn in another living thing. Karma, which is the belief that what you do today effects what happens tomorrow and what happened today was somehow based on what you did yesterday, determines what your reincarnation will be. The Indus River is sacred and people bath in it even though it is polluted.. Most Hindus do not eat beef because the cow is a sacred animal in India. Cows are allowed to roam free in the streets of India. Although food is sold on the street, it is not a wise decision to eat it because it can make you very ill.

The world’s available oil supply is beginning to run out. Our culture is very dependent on crude oil. Oil is the most important product traded between countries. Although we don’t know exactly how much oil is left in the ground, geophysicist M. King Hubbert predicts the world’s oil will peak in about 23 years. Peak oil production means that the first half of the oil from an oil field is easier to pump than the second half. According to geologists new oil will be more difficult and expensive to drill. Since the majority of the world’s oil comes from the Middle East politics have made things difficult in the past. The government needs to move towards oil free choices because the world’s oil is disappearing quickly.

Winter 1938

Dear Colleen,

I can’t believe it has been over ten years since Kemal Ataturk, the powerful president of our Turkish Republic created a law forbidding fezzes to be worn. Although the new hats and western clothing are very modern, I still miss seeing the Turkish men wearing their traditional fezzes. I must admit I do enjoy the changes for women in my country. Not having to wear a veil is one thing I truly enjoy. It is nice to be able to see the other women’s faces. It is also nice to see that the young girls are going to school just like boys their age.

Shortly after Kemal Ataturk moved the capital from Istanbul to Ankara and the Roman alphabet was introduced, I got a job at the local newspaper. My skills with Western European languages have been very helpful to me in my job.

I am curious to see the changes in our country and government now that our dictator Kemal Ataturk has died.

Sincerely,

Micaela
